As an Austin-based company, we are obviously pretty in tune with our local hotel community. Our city is growing. At a very fast rate. And not just the people who are moving here (about 157 people a day) but the people coming to visit for city wide events, conferences and business travel. Since 2009, our hotel demand has grown three times its supply. That means that people are starting to catch on to something we’ve known for a while — Austin is a great travel destination.
So what are we doing to meet that demand? For starters, more hotels are being built downtown. This year the downtown area welcomed the JW Marriott Austin (now the largest Austin hotel) and The Westin Austin Downtown. Hotel Van Zandt is set to make its debut very soon. There are also several more that are coming in the next couple of years.
One of them is the Fairmont Austin. It’s not set to open until 2017, but we got a sneak peek of what’s in store for this property…and it didn’t fail to impress us. The renderings are gorgeous (see above) and it’s going to be a very great addition to the Austin hotel community. Below are some pics from their model…
The location is great, it’s going to be across the street from the Austin Convention Center and will even have a canopy walkway that will directly connect the two buildings. So folks won’t even have to worry about weather or crosswalks. There will be 1,068 rooms (making it the largest Austin hotel) and will feature over 106,000 square feet of event space which includes an outdoor event space. It will be a new hot spot for city wide events, conferences and meetings. There will even be a private “speakeasy” area that is only accessible with the guidance of hotel staff…which will be perfect for VIPs at events like ACL and SXSW.
The property will also be a great pick for business travelers (or really any travelers). It’s a short walk or drive to downtown buildings, you can easily access the Lady Bird Lake trails and it’s across the street from the infamous Rainey Street District. There will be several dining options to meet whatever guests are in the mood for.
With the addition of the Fairmont Austin and other hotel properties set to debut in the next few years, we’ll be ready to take our city to the next level. Austin will be able to compete with other popular destinations for conferences, conventions and the other events that draw visitors beyond the existing city wide events. And we can’t wait to be a part of it.
